Spring & Fall are my favorite seasons in Korea. Spring for obvious reasons such as this. The scene that greets me home at my apartment entrance. 제가 아는 산본 주민이 말씀하신것 처럼, "살지 않으면 못 느끼는 산본의 매력."

Since August 2006, I’ve been calling Korea my home. For many of my friends back in the US, Korea is either a country that is somewhere near & looks a lot like Vietnam and for others who are a bit more geographically educated, it’s a country in Northeast Asia, overshadowed by China & Japan. So many people ask me, “How’s Korea dude?” “What’s your favorite thing about it?” “What is Korea like?”

I’m embarrassed to admit, but I don’t really say much because I honestly haven’t thought about the right combination of words to evoke the certain emotion & feelings that encapsulates what this country is… for me. But there’s also the fact that I don’t know Korea as much as I would like to know Korea. Okay, I speak Korean, I was born here and I do understand almost all of the cultural intricacies… although some of them, I refuse to accept. To really KNOW a place… what is that standard? I know Seoul, better than I know my town of Sanbon, which is where I live. But the rest of Korea, because there’s so much more to Korea than just the capital, I can’t say that I know it.

My rambling is getting long… So for all of my friends who’ve asked me “How’s Korea?” and got an inadequate answer from me, film director David Dutton sums up the “FEEL” of Korea beautifully in this <10min video. This video is very inspiring for me because I want to travel all around the little nooks & crannies of Korea on my motorcycle and capture it in a video blog like this. Basically this video summarizes a project that I’ve been wanting to do for the past several years. It might just be the push that gets me started. 전 2006년 8월부터 한국에서 살고있습니다. 미국에 많은 친구들은 한국이 배트남과 가까이 있으면서 비슷한 나라다 라고 생각하는 친구들도 있고, 뭐 좀 더 아는 애들은 중국과 일본 사이에 껴있는 나라라고 생각하죠. 그래서 애들이 저한테 많이 물어보죠. “야! 한국 어때?” “한국의 제일 좋은 점이 뭐야?”

그런데, 좀 부끄럽지만, 전 대답을 잘 못 해줍니다. 제가 한국이란 나라가 저한테는 어떤 감정과 feel을 주는 곳이다 라는 것을 표현해주는 단어/말들을 자세히 생각해보지 않아거든요…ㅜㅜ 당연히 전 한국말도 얼마큼 하고, 한국에서 태어나고, 또 많은 문화와 또 왜국인들이 이해 못 하는 미묘한 것들도 다 알고 있죠… 어떤 면들은 일부러 받아들이지 않는것들도 있지만. 하지만 4년이 넘는 시간 동안, 제가 한국을 알고 싶은 만큼 알고있지 않습니다. 전 서울은 좀 아는것 같아요, 그렇지만 그 동안 너무 바뻐서 제가 살고있는 동네는 잘 몰라요. 그리고 한국은 서울 말고 또 더 많은 곳들이 있는데, 그런 곳들을 경험해보지 않고 한국을 알수 있다고 말 할수 있을까요?

암튼, 제 말이 길어지고 있는데, 과거에 저한테 한국에 대해서 물어봤는데, 제가 대답을 잘 못해준 친구들을 위해서 이 비디오를 올립니다. 영화 감독 David Dutton이란 사람이 한국 여행을 하면서 한국에 문화와 아름다움, 제가 말로 표현하지 못한 한국에 FEEL을 전달해주는 비디오에요. 그리고 이 동영상은 제가 오토바이 타고 잘 알려지지 않은 한국의 구석 구석들을 돌아다니면서 만들고 싶은 프로젝트를 딱~~~~ 요약해주는 동영상입니다. (시간있으시면 비디오 꼭 풀 스크린, HD 화질로 보세요!ㅎㅎ)
